A memorial service for Carole Lee Hastings, 65, of North Bend will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 20 at the Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Avenue in Coos Bay with pastor Don Berney of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship, officiating.  Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.

Carole was born April 6, 1952 in Sacramento, Calif. to Cecil and Faye (Clark) Parks.  She passed away Aug. 14 in North Bend.

She grew up in Colorado.  After the passing of her parents at a young age, she and her sister, Karen were raised by their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson on their family farm.

In the early 70s, she met Bill Hastings and they were married May 25, 1975 in Mead, Colo.  She got her AA in teaching and was a teacher at the Star School for handicapped and disabled children, while Bill worked in the oil fields in Colo. and Wyo.  In June 1977, their son, Carl Michael Hastings was born in Fort Morgan, Colo.  Then five years later, the family moved to Oregon. They purchased the Wagon Wheel grocery store in 1982, which they still own today.

Over the years, she worked at Head Start and went on to open her own daycare, while still managing to work at the Wagon Wheel.  She ran her own daycare for years before “retiring”, but she continued her work at their store.  Carole loved many children over the years and had many “honorary grandchildren” due to her huge capacity to bring joy, comfort and love to them all.  The children loved to spend time learning their ABCs and playing games with her.  One of her greatest joys was when Mackenzie Mae Hastings was born in January 2009. She and Bill loved to spend as much time as they could with their granddaughter, Mackenzie.

She was also a proud volunteer at the Hauser Fire Association for almost 35 years.  She was the one to volunteer for anything and get things organized and done.  She always helped out at the spaghetti feed and the shopping for children and families of burned out victims.

She will be dearly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.  She touched so many people’s lives in such a positive and uplifting way.

She is survived by her husband, William “Bill” Hastings of North Bend; son, Carl and wife, Kim Hastings of Coos Bay; granddaughter, Mackenzie Hastings of Coos Bay; sister, Karen and husband, Jerry Stillwell of Longmont, Colo.; niece, Stacy and Charlie McClouth of San Francisco, Calif.; great-nephew, Alex McClouth; adopted grandchildren, Nick Borguns of North Bend, Dylan and Gavyn Grenade of Myrtle Point, Cooper and Lexi Davis of North Bend; mother-in-law, Helen Hastings of Octotillo, Calif.; brothers in law, Ed Hastings and family of San Diego, Calif., Harold Hastings and family of Wyo., Dennis Hastings and family of Nebr.; sister-in-law, Linda Briggs and family of San Diego, Calif.; as well as numerous friends that are just like family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for all donations to be made in Carole’s name to the Hauser Fire Association, 93622 Viking Lane, North Bend, Oregon 97459.

Arrangements are under the care of Coos Bay Chapel, 541-267-3131.

Friends and family are encouraged to sign the online guestbook.
