Carlos Antonio Montiel

April 27, 1942 ~ March 1, 2017 (age 74) 74 Years Old

A memorial Mass for Carlos Antonio Montiel, 74, of Coos Bay will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 18 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 359 S. Sixth St. in Coos Bay with Father Robert Wolf officiating. Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.

Carlos was born April 27, 1942, in San Antonio, Baja California, Mexico. After a courageous battle with cancer, he passed away March 1, 2017, at home in Coos Bay. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.

His mother, María Nieves married Floyd Rhoades, a local commercial fisherman, in 1960 and the family immigrated to the United States. They lived in Crescent City, Calif., and later in Brookings before establishing their residence in Coos Bay. At 18, he began working alongside his stepfather. He continued as a commercial fisherman until a terrible car accident altered the course of his adult life.

While living in the United States, Carlos maintained a relationship with his childhood sweetheart and in 1971 Carlos and Maria Nuñez were married in La Paz, Baja California. They returned to Coos Bay and had their two children, Karla and Floyd.

Carlos enjoyed being outside working in his yard. For many years he could be found at Pony Village enjoying a cup of coffee. He had many friends there and was well-known for stopping in various places just to say “Hello”. His greatest joy was his family. He loved attending every sporting event or activity that his children were a part of growing up. That same enjoyment continued with his five beloved grandchildren. He was blessed to have his grandchildren near and if they were involved with something, Grandpa tried to be there. They were the true joy in his life.

Carlos is survived by his wife of 45 years, María Dolores; daughter, Karla Delgado, husband, Steve, and children, Hannah, Gabriel and Ellie; son, Floyd Montiel, wife Tammie, and children, Dominic and Tatum; sister, Hilda Montiel; niece, Norma Atwood, husband, Larry, and children, Kenneth Lester and Mariana Atwood; niece, Iliana Montiel and son, Cody Rutledge; as well as numerous cousins in California and Mexico.

Arrangements are under the care of Coos Bay Chapel, 541-267-3131.
