Memorial services will be held for Victor Schweitz of Coos Bay at 2 p.m., Friday, May 19, at the First Baptist Church, 1140 S. 10th St., in Coos Bay. Pastor Gary Rice of the First Baptist Church will officiate. A viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson. Family graveside interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday May 19, at Ocean View Memory Gardens, 1525 Ocean Blvd., in Coos Bay
Victor was born Nov. 2, 1930 in Antelope, N.D., to Adam and Selma (Pipke) Schweitz one of 13 brothers and sisters. He passed away May 10, 2017 in Coquille.
He moved to Salem at an early age. He graduated from North Salem High and was a state wrestling champion in his weight class in 48 and 49. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and continued his education at O.T.I. in Klamath Falls. He met and later married Frances D. Larson Sept. 20, 1953. They had three children, Roger, Rodney, and Sheryl. Frances passed away in 1984. The family moved from Salem to Coos Bay in 1959. Victor was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He started work with the survey crew and advanced to marine information specialist, coordinating dredge operations and permit inspecting, working the coastal waters from Brookings to Depot Bay. He retired in 1988 after 33 years of service. On July 9, 1994, Victor married Irene Settle. They enjoyed dancing and were members of the First Baptist Church in Coos Bay. Victor was very involved with the church until his health would no longer allow. Victor was a member of both the Eagles and Elks lodges. He officiated high school sports for many years. Victor loved hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed hunting with his grandson Tim.
Victor is survived by his wife, Irene of Coos Bay; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Maria Schweitz of Alhambra, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Penny Schweitz of North Bend; daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl and Craig Rhoden of Springfield; stepdaughter, Dody Baker of Coos Bay; stepson, Bryan Baker of Santa Margarita, Calif.; grandkids, Tim, Sarah, Cassidy, Haley, Joshua, Matthew, Wendy, Jessica, and Cameron; five great-grandkids; many nieces and nephews; and his sister, Esther Bettcher of Salem.
