A memorial service to celebrate the life of Emma E. Smith, 81, of North Bend, will be held on Saturday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. at the Bay Area Church of the Nazarene, 1850 Clark Street in North Bend, with Pastor Mark Shiro presiding. A private family graveside committal will be held at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Coos Bay.
Emma was born on October 14, 1936 in North Bend, Oregon to James F. Baller and Mable M. ( Govier ) Baller. She passed away on December 9, 2017 in Coos Bay, Oregon.
Emma was raised in Empire where she attended Empire Grade School. She graduated from North Bend High School, class of 1954 and soon afterward attended Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Oregon where she met her first husband, Samuel Ghattas. She traveled extensively with Samuel to Texas and New York, as well as overseas to Lebanon, Egypt, Canada, and ultimately returning back to North Bend with her children.
Emma owned and operated Em & M’s Upholstery, serving the Coos Bay/North Bend area for more than 30 years. In 1986, Emma married her grade school classmate, Walter Smith, and they resided on the family farm until her Walter’s passing in 2016. Emma served as a volunteer and also as Volunteer Training Coordinator at Bay Area Hospital. Walter and Emma regularly attended the Bay Area Church of the Nazarene in North Bend.
Emma is survived by her son, Maurice Ghattas and his wife Shelly; daughter Mona Donalson and her husband Bradley; step-daughter Marion Margalit and her husband Ori; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Mark Thompson of Stayton; her parents, James and Mable Baller of Broken Bow, Nebraska; and brother and sister-in-law, William and Debra Baller of Broken Bow, Nebraska.
