William "Mr. Bill" Hastings Obituary

A memorial service for William Robert Hastings, 73, of Coos Bay will be held at 11 am, Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Avenue in Coos Bay.

William “Mr. Bill” was born July 23, 1952, in San Diego, California to Harold and Helen (Palmer) Hastings. William was a twin to Michael Hastings, who passed away in 1983.  William passed away August 14, 2025, in Coos Bay, which was the 8th Anniversary of his beloved Carole Lee Hastings passing, they are now together.

Bill grew up in San Diego, California surrounded by his siblings and getting into stuff (trouble) with his twin Mike. In the early 70s Bill met Carole Lee Parks, while working in the oil fields, they got engaged on December 12, 1974, and were married on May 25, 1975, in Mead, Colorado.  Bill had been working in the oil fields in Colorado and Wyoming and in June 1977, their son, Carl Michael Hastings was born in Fort Morgan, Colorado. Then five years later the family moved to Oregon; to purchase the Wagon Wheel grocery store on December 18, 1982, this was Bill’s dream.

Bill worked and owned the Wagon Wheel Grocery until he sold it in September of 2024. Through the years, Bill contributed in many ways to the community of Hauser, he and Carole made the Wagon Wheel about family, but also a corner piece of the community of Hauser. As such, the Hastings Family donated blood, sweat, tears, clothes, food and any other item a person needed. The “Store” was Bill’s daily life for over 40 years, and he tried to make sure all who came in were treated special, like coming in on your birthday-get a song & a candy bar! Bill’s son Carl grew up at the Wagon Wheel, as well as working there at $1.00 an hour, which was a lot for a little kid! Bill was a great role model for not only Carl, but to many others as well. Carl and Bill were very close as they spoke on the phone daily or saw each other in person. One of Bill and Carole’s greatest joys was when Mackenzie Mae Hastings was born in January of 2009. They both loved to spend as much time as they could with Mackenzie. Papa Bill and Kenzie spent lots of time together in the last few years, including Papa Bill picking her up from school to have a “date”, even though Kenzie is 16 and driving now. Bill met Kim for lunch every Friday even though they talked every other day, I guess you could say the Hastings Family was all about our family.

Bill was also a proud volunteer at the Hauser Fire department for over 40 years. Bill started as a volunteer fireman in 1982, then went on to the Fire Department board in 2009. Bill & Carole both volunteered for the Hauser Fire Association, which included the yearly Spaghetti Feed Fund raiser. Bill had just finished serving out his term on the board at the end of June 2025.

William, Dad, Papa, Bill will be dearly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He made such a difference in so many people’s lives. He is survived by his son, Carl and wife, Kim Hastings of Coos Bay; granddaughter, Mackenzie Hastings of Coos Bay; Great nephew, Tyler Hastings of Coos Bay; beloved dog Bandit; nephew Roger Hastings and family of Vancouver, WA; brothers, Ed Hastings and family of San Diego, Calif., Dennis Hastings and family of Lincoln,  NE; sister, Linda Briggs and family of San Diego, CA.; Many nieces and nephews of the Hastings Family; Longtime friends Jerry and Laura Wharton; Eric and Mary Kohler; Sister in law Karen and husband Jerry Stillwell of Longmont, CO; Stacy McClouth and family of San Franscico, CA; adopted grandchildren, Nick Borgen of Spokane, WA; Dylan and Gavyn Grenade of Myrtle Point, OR as well as numerous friends that are just like family.
