Shirley Hope Richards was born in Sturgis, South Dakota February 18, 1936. She passed away in her home in Coos Bay February 21, 2021. Her final days were filled with precious words and visits from many who loved her.
Shirley's first memories involved the construction of Mt. Rushmore, of which her grandfather and father played a significant role. The family soon moved to Oregon, where they bounced from place to place, including Bull Run and Portland.
Through a friend in Portland, she was introduced to the love of her life, Dale Eugene Richards. They were married in April of 1954 and settled in the Coos Bay area. A year later, their first son, Leslie, was born. Soon after, sons Tony and Kenneth were brought into the world, and years later, Steven came along to complete the family.
Every person who knew Shirley knew she practiced the three Fs: family, friends, and faith. She cared for every person she met, and would give the shirt off of her back even to a stranger. Her family reunions were alway full of laughter and fun, and she beamed at every event where her loved ones could gather. Dinners at Shirley's house meant you weren't going home hungry, and often meant you were taking home leftovers. And while Shirley enjoyed reading, her Bible was the only book which was always by her side.
Shirley's smile was infectious, and it would always glow when she'd spend time around her children and grandchildren. Her loved ones kept her strong even in times of doubt, as did her faith. No matter what came her way, Shirley persevered.
Shirley is survived by her eldest sons, Leslie and Tony, as well as her sister Phyllis. She's also survived by her grandchildren, Leslie (Craig), Doug, Julie, Naomi, Ryan, Becky, Randall, Krystal, and Nicholas, along with many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and father to her four boys, Dale, in April of 1980. She instantly became the rock for her family upon his death. In 2005, the Lord took her baby boy, Steven, and a year later Steven's eldest daughter Ashlee was tragically carried away much too soon. In 2014, her son and friend Kenneth was also called home. Her siblings Harvey, Hubert, and Royalleen, as well as her parents, also passed before her time. Her sister Beverly's circumstances are unknown.
For any thoughts to be left for her family, Shirley's voicemail will be available until the middle of April. Leave a message, we will hear it and her spirit will rejoice. 541-252-8460
Shirley will be interred at Ocean View Memorial Gardens along with her precious boys, Kenneth and Steven. They will be reunited with their beloved Dale after many long decades apart. A service for family and friends will be held later in the year. One final gathering to share her spirit.
