Norma Wood, beloved wife, mom, grandma, and dear friend, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 77 years old.
Born on May 30, 1947, in Oakland, California, to Mark and Earline Atwell, Norma’s early years were filled with love and adventure. In the early 1950s, her family moved to Coquille, Oregon, where she attended Coquille schools from the first grade through high school. It was there that she built many cherished friendships, including ones that would last a lifetime with her dear friends, Linda Polhemus and Joyce Russell. After high school, Norma attended Southern Oregon State College (now Southern Oregon University) for one year before life took her on a beautiful new journey. On May 12, 1967, she married the love of her life, David Wood, in Hawaii while David was on leave from the United States Marine Corps. Their union was one of deep love and partnership, spanning 58 wonderful years.
Norma dedicated 40 years of her life as the Clinic Manager for Bay Eye Clinic, where she was known for her kindness, efficiency, and warm presence. Her work touched the lives of many in the community, and her friendships extended far beyond the walls of the clinic. Norma was blessed with a close circle of friends, including her special local friend Kathy Bennett, with whom she shared weekly coffee dates that continued until the very end. Her friendships were an important part of her life and a reflection of her loving spirit.
She is survived by her devoted husband, David Wood; her daughter, Sarah Prince and son-in-law Gary Prince, and their daughters, Jordyn and Kenzie; her son, Mark Wood and daughter-in-law, Kristin, and their children, Carson, Cassidy, Chloe, and Kellen. She is also lovingly remembered by her cousins, Jack Wilson (wife Mary), Ken Wilson (wife Judy), Donna Theriot (husband Don), uncle Brawley, and sister-in-law, Carolyn Shellhamer (husband Dick).
Norma will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her warmth, her quiet strength, and the deep joy she found in everyday moments. She was a guiding light to those who knew her and will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life will take place from noon to 3:00 pm, Saturday, June 28 at The Back Alley, 1225 Virginia Avenue in North Bend, where friends and family are invited to share memories and honor her beautiful life.
Arrangements are under the care of Coos Bay Chapel, 541-267-3131. Family and friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.coosbayareafunerals.com
