Born into the quiet beauty of rural California, Nellie L. Walker lived a life defined by devotion, resilience, and love. On May 3, 2026, at the age of 92, Nellie went home to be with her Lord and Savior, surrounded by the daughters she cherished so deeply.
Nellie was born on May 16, 1933, in Oakland to Charles and Lucille Stanley. Her childhood was shaped by open land, hard work, and simple joys. She lost her older sister before she had the chance to truly know her, and her parents lovingly opened their home to other children so she would have companionship and opportunities to attend school and church. She often recalled riding her horse to school through the countryside and, during difficult winter weather, staying overnight with other pupils rather than making the long journey home. Those early years instilled in her the quiet strength and resourcefulness that would guide her throughout her life.
On February 7, 1948, she married the love of her life, Lloyd Walker. Together they built not only a home, but a partnership that became the center of everything they did. For seventy years, theirs was a marriage marked by unwavering loyalty, shared purpose, and deep affection. Rarely apart, they moved through life side by side—raising children, building businesses, teaching Sunday School, traveling to Yuma in their RV, and facing every season together with steadfast love.
Nellie’s life was never measured by titles or recognition, but by the countless ways she poured herself into others. She was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word, creating a home filled with warmth, faith, laughter, and welcome. Although she earned her license as a beautician, Nellie found her greatest calling in raising her children and nurturing her family. She sewed clothing and alterations with skilled hands, worked briefly as a seamstress for JCPenney, raised poodles both from necessity and affection for animals, and later joined Lloyd in commercial fishing—proudly calling herself “the captain of the boat.”
She embraced life fully and enthusiastically. Whether gardening, camping, fishing, hunting, crafting, dancing, or playing pinochle with friends in Nevada, Nellie found joy in both adventure and fellowship. Music was another gift she carried throughout her life, filling her home with the sounds of the piano, accordion, and organ. In quieter years, happiness could still be found in word search puzzles, drives to see the elk at Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, watching seals along Simpson Reef, or sharing ice cream with those she loved.
Above all, faith anchored Nellie’s life. She served faithfully in church communities wherever she lived and believed deeply in leading by example. Her kindness was gentle but constant; her generosity often unseen. She sacrificed willingly so her children could experience music, horsemanship, dance, and opportunities she believed would enrich their lives. Through every chapter, she remained a source of encouragement, steadiness, and unconditional love.
Her hands held her family together, and her heart shaped generations. Those who knew Nellie will remember her not only for what she did, but for how she made others feel—welcomed, supported, and deeply loved.
Nellie is survived by her daughters, Louetta Jansen of Coos Bay, Laurie Nordahl of North Bend, and Lisa Newsum of North Bend; ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Allan Walker and by Lloyd, her beloved husband and soulmate.
She will be laid to rest beside Lloyd at Roseburg National Cemetery on May 27, 2026, at 1:00 pm. A celebration of Nellie’s life will be held on June 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Bay Area Church of the Nazarene, 1850 Clark Street in North Bend with Pastor Mark Schiro officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to a faith-based children’s ministry, such as the children’s ministry at Bay Area Church of the Nazarene.
