Monte Ray Rutherford

With profound sadness yet boundless gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of Monte Rutherford after a brave fight with cancer. Surrounded by his beloved family, Monte left this world the same way he lived in it: with quiet strength, deep love, and an unshakable sense of duty.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 21, 1947, Monte moved with his family to Santa Barbara at age fifteen. He graduated from San Marcos High School in 1965 and soon began what would become an extraordinary sixty year career with GTE ( later Verizon, and ATCO ). From Central Office Technician and Cable Splicer to Construction Supervisor, Forecast Analyst, OSP Planner, and Engineer, Monte’s Knowledge, work ethic, and calm leadership made him a well-respected leader. In six decades, he never took a sick day. He watched an industry transform from copper wire to fiber optics and beyond, always adapting, always reliable, always respected.

In 1970 Monte married Heidi. Fifty-six years later their bond remained as tender as the day they said, “I do.” Together they built a home filled with laughter, mutual respect, and later a friendship that lasted for the rest of his life.

Above all, Monte was a father and mentor in the truest sense. To his sons Wyatt and Adam, he gave more than guidance; he gave an example. He taught them integrity when no one was watching, the dignity of hard work, and the quiet courage to stand tall when life isn’t always fair. His lessons were never loud, but they echo loudly in the men his boys became.

Monte was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Mary Rutherford; and his beloved grandson, Dylan Rutherford.

Monte is survived by the family he cherished beyond measure; sons, Wyatt Rutherford of Coos Bay and Adam Rutherford of Bend; grandchildren, Ashley Mauer and Megan Rutherford ( children of Wyatt ), Karisa Rutherford, Ashley White and Ryan Rutherford ( children of Adam ); great-grandson, Tristen ( son of Karisa ); Heidi Goodgame; and several special young women who held a big piece of his heart, Morgan Sugar-Butter of Bend, Nichole Rutherford of Coos Bay, Rachelle and Lily Casey of Coos Bay.

A man of few words but infinite heart, Monte leaves behind a legacy measured not in years but in the lives he touched. He showed us that a good life well lived is one rooted in love, loyalty, and showing up, every single day, for the people who matter most. Rest easy, Dad. We’ll always remember and love you.
