Madeleine Jones Obituary

On January 6, 2024, Madeleine Anne Fortinberry Jones passed into eternal rest in Heaven from natural causes. She was 94 1/2 years old. Born in Atlanta, GA, May 1, 1929, as a young adult she worked as a secretary for the family business and others in town. She met George Bruce Jones, who was based at Fort Benning, on a double date to a soda shop in Atlanta after WWII. They soon became engaged, then Bruce was deployed to Austria, where the Korean War kept him stationed 4 long years. Madeleine waited for him and they were married in Atlanta July 11, 1952. They lived out their lives with laughter and love, and in service to God, their family, and their neighbors in Georgia, California, and Oregon. Madeleine worked at World Vision, Int’l, in Monrovia, 9 years, then Focus on the Family briefly, retiring in 1987 when they moved to Coos Bay, Oregon. They attended Bay Area Bible Baptist Church until 2004, when Madeleine moved to California with her daughter Janice Mitchell and family. She returned to Coos Bay in 2017 to live with her daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Randy Hammer.

Madeleine was preceded in death on Dec. 29, 2002, by her husband of 50 ½ years, and by her sisters and brothers: Elizabeth Pentecost, Sheldon B. Fortinberry II, Jacqueline Moore, and Albert Fortinberry, all of Georgia. She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses: Kathryn and Randy Hammer of Coos Bay, OR; Patty Farrell and David Farrell of Tualatin, OR; Janice and Rommey Mitchell of Dayton, NV. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren and their spouses: Kayella & Steve Daughterty, Benjamin & Chelsea Reinhart, Elizabeth & Bill Croce, Shawn Reinhart & Tori Hernandez; Kathryn Elise Rose O’Conaill, John Bruce Farrell; Jerrod & Nicole Mitchell; Heather Mitchell Mason; Alaina Kenny; and Melissa & Robert Kurschner; and by 15 great-grandchildren: Khloe & Hailey Reinhart; Noah, Elisha, and Sarah Hoyle; Mitchell and Owen Mason; Jonathan and Breeza Braswell and Emmalei Kenny;  Robbie, Lilly, Hannah, and Priscilla Kurschner; and Camila Reinhart-Hernandez. Madeleine is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews throughout the United States.

Services are to be held in North Bend and Portland, Oregon: Memorial at Bay Area Bible Baptist Church, 2590 14th St (corner of 14th and Oak), North Bend, OR, 97459, 541-756-6707, May 4th, 2024 at 11:00am; and Graveside at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR, May 6th, 2024, at 11:00am. Remembrances and condolences may be sent to the church, and donations may be made in Madeleine’s memory to Teen Challenge.
