Landis D. Worthen Obituary

Landis Derrell Worthen, 96, of Coos Bay, Oregon, passed away April 4, 2026. He was born August 11, 1929, in Prattsville, Arkansas, to Travis and Beron (Mitchell) Worthen. Raised on a cotton farm, he learned early the values of hard work, humility, and perseverance.

In 1947, at age 18, Landis moved to Coos Bay, Oregon, where he began working in the timber industry, pulling the green chain. His work was interrupted when he received a telegram from his mother informing him that the U.S. Army needed him to serve. He served from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War and was a proud Purple Heart veteran. After completing his military
service, Landis returned to Coos Bay and resumed his career in the lumber industry. He worked at Coos Head Lumber for 42 years before retiring.

Landis was a devoted Christian and a regular attending member of The First Baptist Church in Coos Bay. He enjoyed square dancing, fishing, beekeeping, growing flowers and gardening, walking, and picking berries.

Survivors include his children: Polly Hollenbeck (Lee) of Coos Bay, Julia Avery (Les) of Salem, Connecticut and Mitchell Worthen of Eugene. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 17 great-
grandchildren, and 1 great-great- grandchild. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Worthen Zemouri.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the Inland Point staff for their support and care. He often mentioned how much he appreciated all what they did for him. He will be missed. This last year South Coast Hospice played an important role in his daily living and quality of life.

A memorial ceremony will be held at 11am, Friday, April 17 at the First Baptist Church, S. 10th Street, Coos Bay. Family and friends are invited to attend. There will be refreshments following the ceremony. A private military burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park at 2:00pm for immediate family members.
