Jon A. Menten

Jon Allen Menten, 75, passed away peacefully on June 22nd, 2026, in Coos Bay, OR surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer.

Jon was born on August 21st, 1950, in St. Paul MN. Jon graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Forest and Natural Resource Management in 1977.

After graduating Jon started his career with the Bureau of Land Management in 1979 in Medford, OR. He transferred with his family to Battle Mountain, NV, followed by another transfer to Coos Bay, OR where he worked for 20 years. He then accepted a position in Washington D.C. where he retired in 2011. His main occupations were forest management and wildland firefighting.

Jon spent his life as a devoted father, husband, and grandfather and was known for his sense of adventure. Some of his favorite pastimes include windsurfing, surfing, hunting, and fishing. His love of music brought him to play in several local bands.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Theodora Menten, and his children Brian Menten and wife Rashelle, Kathryn Hillenhagen and husband Florian, and Charlotte Menten, his grandchildren Finnegan, Harper, Esther, and Augustus Menten, Maya Hillenhagen, his sister Geraldine Engvall and his best friend Sully, the Scottish Terrier. He was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Ruth, his sister Gail Graham and his OG best friend Riley, the original Scottish Terrier.

Jon passed on his love for music, the outdoors, and his sense of adventure to his children and his grandchildren. His family and friends will miss his sense of humor, kindness, love of animals, and his willingness to always lend a helping hand.

A viewing will be held at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Ave., Coos Bay, OR, on June 30th between 4pm-7pm.

There will be a memorial at the chapel on July 1st at 2pm with a graveside service at Sunset Memorial Park at 3pm, and a Celebration of Life at Sharkbites Seafood Café at 5pm.
