James “Jim” Edward Nelson

January 1, 1942 – June 10, 2026

James Edward “Jim” Nelson was born in Manhattan, Kansas on January 1st, 1942, and died at home in Coos Bay on June 10th, 2026 at the age of 84.  At his request, no services will be held.  

Jim moved with his family from Kansas to Oregon when he was very young and lived in Coos Bay for nearly 80 years.  Jim overcame many challenges in his life, most notably losing his vision at the age of 15.  Although he was legally blind at such a young age, he did not let this slow him down.  He graduated high school and went to college at SWOCC and the University of Oregon, where he received a degree in Business Administration by completing his coursework in Braille. 

Jim started his career in business after graduation, but while between assignments in business management, he started substituting as a school custodian for the Coos Bay school district.  It was during this time that he met and married his wife of 55 years, Virginia Cooley, a teacher.  He moved from a substitute to a full-time job with Coos Bay Schools and continued to work as a school custodian until his retirement, nearly 40 years later.

“Mr. Jim”, as he was known to the elementary students was more than just a school custodian but served as a volunteer working with kids including many years as a little league baseball coach.  He was known for his silly antics and special movie days provided for students, often filling the school with the smell of fresh popcorn he prepared with joy.  His love for kids was most obvious when being goofy with his son, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  

Jim is survived by his son, Lance Nelson; his grandchildren, Sav Jonesi, Isabella Ravens and August Nelson, and his great-grandchildren, Wesley and Eden, and numerous lifelong friends in the area.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Nelson, earlier this year.
