The family of Orval “Floyd” Smith of Coos Bay is saddened to announce his passing on February 22, 2026 at the age of 80 years. A man known by so many for his kindness and compassion.
A lifelong trucker, who retired to this area in 2005. Despite retiring, he somehow managed to find his way back to the highway hauling for Thomas & Sons. He was a longtime volunteer at Pelican Harbor, helping with donations and food giveaways. He took joy in making care packages and giving them to people.
He was a cancer survivor who against the odds that came with a grim prognosis in 2023 responded well to treatment, despite doctors saying it wouldn’t do any good. That treatment made it possible for him to be there to watch the granddaughter he had once accompanied to kindergarten walk across the stage to receive her high school diploma. His devotion to his family was his greatest strength. He loved and cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy instills the value of time, experiences, and storytelling.
Floyd is survived by his wife, Laura; their children, Cheryl, Tim, and Stephanie (James); grandchildren, Jon (Sarah), Cally (Zach), Nick, and Chacha; great-grandchildren, Josh, Tyler, Michael, Hailee, Kaylee, Landis, and Zayden. He is preceded in death by granddaughter, Brittany.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 21, at 2:00 pm at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Avenue in Coos Bay.
Arrangements are under the care of Coos Bay Chapel, 541-267-3131. Family and friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.coosbayareafunerals.com
