A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of David George Laird, 80, of North Bend, will be held Saturday, May 16, at 1:00 PM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church 400 Highland Ave. Coos Bay. A celebration of life will follow at 2:00 PM at Black Market Gourmet 495 Central Ave. Coos Bay.
David was born April 4, 1945 in Myrtle Point, Oregon, to Jack and Gretchen (Clinton) Laird and the eldest of six sons. He passed peacefully Feb. 19, 2026 at Peace Health Hospital in Eugene, Oregon.
He graduated from Marshfield High and received his undergraduate teaching degree from OCE (Western) after several years at Oregon State University. He met Terrye while at summer school at Oregon State and they shared 54 years of married life. He also earned a master's from the University of Oregon. He was a long-time teacher and principal in the Coos Bay School District. In his personal and professional life, he was recognized as a role model, an innovative educator, and a tireless advocate for the students in his schools.
David was a waterman - he enjoyed ocean fishing on the Oregon coast, river fishing at the Laird cabin on the Rogue River, and sailing with family and friends. He was a curious and passionate person, pursuing diverse hobbies that included photography, hunting, camping, athletic officiating, skiing, remote-control vehicles, international travel, and many more.
David will be greatly missed by his wife, Terrye; brothers, Clint, Bruce, Andy and George; sons, Geoff and Brad; grandchildren, Violet and Wyatt and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas Theodore Laird.
David's family suggests that contributions be made to your local school scholarship fund, in lieu of flowers.
Cremation rites have been held at Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory, Coos Bay with inurnment at All Saints Columbarium at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Coos Bay
