Thomas Lee Munyon

April 20, 1963 – May 31, 2017

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Tom Munyon, 54, of Algona, WA, was held in Clarksville, Arkansas. He was laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery in Arkansas. A memorial service will take place at a later date as well in his hometown of Seattle.

Tom was born in North Bend, Oregon on April 20, 1963 to Thomas Lee Munyon and Henryetta Sears Belcher. He grew up in North Bend and graduated from North Bend High School, class of 1981 ( Bulldog Pride Inside!); he was a standout wrestler and football player. After graduation, he went to Southern Oregon State College in Ashland and played football. Upon graduation he moved to Eugene to pursue his Masters in Marketing. However, while working at Seneca Sawmill during the summer in Eugene he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer.

Tom then moved to Seattle and battled cancer for four years and then was pronounced cancer free. He went to work for Genie for about 8 years and on to TSA in November of 2003 and had been there ever since. Tom was a hard worker and loved his family very much. He never married but had a love in his life, Laurie LeBlanc.

Tom loved his nieces very much. He attended graduations, weddings, birthdays and family functions. He was always up for a good, long hike and enjoyed travelling with his girlfriend, Laurie. Despite his cancer diagnosis, he was an optimistic person and always had a joke or a smile for everyone. Three years ago, his dad had a stroke and Tom took family leave to stay with his dad for 6 months. He then moved his dad to a facility closer to home so that he was able to visit every day after work. While caring for his dad, November 14, 2014 he found himself having a hard time swallowing food. Tom put his own health on hold to take care of his dad; however, April 2015, after numerous tests, he found out he had throat cancer. Another journey was about to begin. After Tom buried his dad and his younger sister, June 2015, he started chemotherapy and radiation to combat the throat cancer. Once again, he was declared cancer free after 3 months of treatment. However, during follow up visits the toll on his body began to become evident. Complications and severe symptoms arose. Tom passed away on May 31, 2017 at Harborview Hospital after a weekend of surgeries to no avail. He will be greatly missed.

Tom is survived by his mother, Henryetta Belcher and her husband Don of Clarksville, AR; sisters, Debbie Munyon Gray of Coos Bay and Dana Munyon  Bergstrom and her husband Dave of Spokane, WA; brothers, Mark Smith and his wife Janell of Dallas, TX, Mike Smith and his wife Melissa of Moro, Kyle Smith of Winston, and Ron Munyon of Spokane, WA; and numerous aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Lee Munyon, and his sister, Donna Munyon Hyman, with whom he will be laid to rest by in Clarksville, Arkansas.
