At her request, private remembrances will be held at a later date for Sandra Kay Nicholls, 76, of North Bend.

Sandra was born December 31, 1940 to Ralph and Lois (Greene) Asla in LaGrande, Oregon. She passed away peacefully in Coos Bay on July 26, surrounded by family.  During her junior year of high school, Sandra’s family moved to Portland, where she graduated from Woodrow Wilson high school in 1957 and attended Portland State University.  She married Tom Nicholls in 1960 in Portland, and they soon moved to North Bend to raise their family.

As a child, she contracted rheumatic fever, which affected her health in the later years of her life.  During her high school years, she was active in theater and music and was a voracious reader; a trait she carried through her adult life.  She worked for over 20 years at Sears and Roebuck in North Bend along with providing day care services for many years as well.  Sandra loved Saturdays at Autzen Stadium and all Oregon Ducks sporting events.  She was a longtime Oregon football season ticket holder and member of the Duck Athletic Fund.  She loved children and being around family.  She loved family gatherings and attending her children and grandchildren’s events.  She was always willing to volunteer and tirelessly gave of herself to various causes and organizations, ranging from school and/or sports activities and fundraisers, to local service organizations, to county elections.  Pound for pound, she was physically one of the strongest women her family was ever around.  Her stubborn, but loving nature will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; sisters, Sharon Adams and Don of Yamhill, Pam Decristoforo and Del of Redlands; brother, Scott Asla and Sue of Bend; children, Tom and Deb of North Bend, Robyn Johnson and Mike of Coos Bay, Kurt and Megan of North Bend and Stephanie Marler and Chris of Coos Bay; grandchildren, Lisa, Austin, Katherine, Jordyn and Hailey.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family suggests donations in Sandi’s name to the Marshfield or North Bend high school scholarship funds.
