Welcome to the memorial page for

Elmer "Lloyd" Dennis

July 11, 1937 ~ December 10, 2017 (age 80) 80 Years Old

A memorial service will be held at a later date for Elmer Lloyd Dennis, 80, of Coos Bay. Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.

Lloyd was born July 11, 1937 in Buffalo, Texas to James Velmer and Robbie Lee (Haskins) Dennis. He passed away December 10, 2017 in Coos Bay.

Lloyd moved to Oregon with his brother James in 1958, where he worked at a gyppo sawmill in Deadwood. He was drafted into the U.S. Army September of 1960 and was stationed in Ft. Lewis, Washington, as a private (E-1) and then as a field communications crewman SP4 (E-4). On May 22, 1962 Lloyd married Margaret Ann Thrasher in Tacoma, Washington, where they met. He was honorably discharged four months later in September of 1962.

Lloyd and Marge moved to Coos Bay in 1962, where he started working for Weyerhaeuser as a fitter, benchman, and filer for many years. In 1972, he accepted a head filer position with US Plywood and moved the family to McCloud, Calif. then to Dunsmuir, Calif. due to lack of housing in McCloud. The mill shut down in 1980 and Lloyd moved on to work in various sawmills in Oregon, until he started his own saw-filing business “Dennis Saw Shop” in 1989.

He loved to collect old cars and could often be found at car shows. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.

Lloyd is survived by the children he raised, Mike Hougardy of Coquille, Alan Hougardy of Algon, Wash., Jim Dennis, Cheryl Dennis and Chris Dennis of Coos Bay; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; granddaughter, Lacey Rutheford, and great-granddaughter, Madason Rutheford.

Arrangements are under the care of Coos Bay Chapel, 541-267-3131
