A funeral service for Dorothy M. McNeil–Brotherton, 98, formerly of North Bend, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 20 at the Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Ave., in Coos Bay with Lily Kirshvink and Ruth Stevens, officiating. A private burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Park in Coos Bay.

Dorothy was born Sept. 8, 1918, to James and Helen Dunaway in Klamath Falls. She passed away May 9, 2017, in Peoria, Ariz.

As a child, she grew up in Reedsport. She married John H. McNeil in June 1936, and they had a wonderful 49-year marriage. John preceded her in death April 12, 1985. They were longtime residents of North Bend.

Dorothy had a long career in banking. Thirty of Dorothy’ s 36 years in the field was at the North Bend branch of First National Bank of Oregon and the remainder were at the Coos Bay branch. She started as a junior clerk in 1944 after several promotions; she became an operations clerk in 1966. She went to the Coos Bay branch as an operations clerk in 1967 and returned to North Bend as an operations officer in 1972.

She was named assistant cashier of the state-wide bank in 1973 and continued as operations officer at North Bend until she entered the banks loan training program in 1974. She received on-the-job training at the North Bend branch and was named a consumer loan officer in 1975.

She was a member of the Southwestern Oregon Community College Advisory Board.

In her lifetime, she was able to travel to 26 different countries.

On March 7, 1991, she married George T. Brotherton; they were married for 13 years until his passing Feb. 23, 2004.

Dorothy’s entire life, beginning as a young child, was devoted to her great faith in God and her involvement in her non-denominational fellowship. Dorothy greeted everyone she met with a warm joyful smile, no one was a stranger. She was a living example of how to always treat others with kindness.

She is survived by her son, John McNeil and wife, Sylvia of Good Year, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jeannie McNeil and Ron McNeil; great-grandsons, Jonathan Barton and wife, Emily, Joeseph Barton and James Barton; great-great-grandchildren, Ava and Silas Barton, all of North Bend /Coos Bay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
