Adele Rinehart Pratt

July 6, 1934 – March 16, 2017

A funeral mass will be held for Adele R. Pratt, 82, of Bandon, formerly of North Bend, on Thursday, March 23rd at 10:00 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 355 Oregon Avenue SE in Bandon, with Father George Kuforiji presiding. A luncheon will follow at the church. A graveside committal will be held following the luncheon at 2:00 p.m. at Ocean View Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1525 Ocean Boulevard SE in Coos Bay.

Adele was born on July 6, 1934 in New York City, New York to Vene Elmer Rinehart and Naomi Louise ( Hafkesbring ) Rinehart. She passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 16, 2017 at Southern Coos Hospital in Bandon.

Adele was an 11-year resident of Harmony Estates Assisted Living, where her thoughtfulness and sense of community earned the title, “First Lady of Harmony.” Famous for learning – and never forgetting – the first name of even casual acquaintances, Adele made everyone feel “special”, staff members said. “She had a huge heart,” said Jennifer Schulz, owner of Harmony. Family members said Adele’s kindness knew no bounds. “Mom looked for the best in every situation and every person,” said her daughter, Eileen, of Portland. Adele’s son Michael, of Whitmore, California, recalled that Adele was as likely to “re-gift” a present as keep it for herself. “She wanted someone else to have a little joy,” Michael said.

Adele was the second of four children born to Vene and Naomi Rinehart of Westfield, New Jersey. She was stricken with polio as an adolescent and separated from her family during treatment. Rallying from illness, Adele excelled at studies and earned an English Degree at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. At various points in life, Adele worked as a proofreader, shop owner and apartment manager. She was a talented artist and wrote poetry up to the time of her death. “She was something,” said her sister, Eileen Bruning.

Adele is survived by son, Michael McGarvey and his wife Kathleen of Whitmore, CA; daughter, Eileen McGarvey of Portland; son, Joseph Gottsch of Florida; sisters, Alice, Carol and Eileen; grandsons, Christopher Schoonover, Michael McGarvey Jr. and Matthew McGarvey; granddaughters, Katherine McGarvey, November McGarvey, Alex Gottsch and Lauren Gottsch; and great-grandchildren, Noah Schoonover, Belicia Schoonover and Rebella McGarvey.

Adele was preceded in death by her parents, Vene and Naomi Rinehart; husband, Lloyd W. Pratt; and her son, John McGarvey, who died at age 18.
